Four ways you can maintain a healthy smile for life!

A lifetime of healthy teeth and gums doesn’t just happen without hard work and dedication. Patients who want a beautiful smile that is healthy and free from disease and cavities need to put in the effort to ensure their smile lasts forever! At Schmitt Dental in Clarksville, TN, we understand the ways in which our patients can maintain a healthy smile. Below are four recommendations for patients interested in ensuring oral health and wellness throughout the years:
- Visit the dentist every six months. During these recall appointments, patients undergo a thorough teeth cleaning and an evaluation to look for signs of periodontal disease or tooth decay, the two conditions that can negatively impact the smile’s health. With early detection and treatment, many of these conditions can be treated quickly and inexpensively before they become a much bigger concern.
- Brush and floss the teeth after every meal. When foods, beverages, sugars, and acids remain on the teeth and gums, they can contribute to the formation of cavities. Cavities are holes that impact the natural tooth structure and put it at risk for infection. Brushing and flossing removes all of these from the teeth and helps keep the smile healthy between dental visits.
- Eat a healthy diet. You are what you eat—right? If you eat healthy foods, you will be nourishing your body with good, hearty foods that will support your immune system and your dental health. Acidic sodas and sugary candies can significantly increase the risk of developing cavities and should be enjoyed occasionally. Patients should also brush their teeth after eating these foods to ensure no acids and sugars are left on the surfaces of the teeth to cause cavities.
- Call the dentist when problems arise. While routine visits should be scheduled every six months, patients should also call their dentist and make an appointment when an issue occurs, such as sudden sensitivity to foods or a toothache. The sooner the conditions are diagnosed and treated, the faster the smile is brought back to its original health.
